Six men appeared in the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly hijacking a truck full of Italian shoes worth R600 000, Mpumalanga police said.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said Zimbabweans Collins Mawarura, Matheus Matjanku, Gilbert Mungwazi and Marisa Tasunungwura were arrested last week along with South Africans Brandon Slimmerts, 22, and Basheer Raffie, 33, after the truck driver reported it missing.

“A Cape Town businessman reported the truck missing when it failed to reach its destination on June 23. On investigating, police recovered the truck on the N4, headed for Nelspruit,” he said.

When police stopped the truck, the man who was originally tasked with driving it was long gone and the two men found in it said they were hired to drive the truck from Johannesburg to Nelspruit.

“They claimed a blue BMW with two men who hired them fled when the police approached the truck. We then set up a trap to nab the bosses by getting the driver of the truck to call them, saying police were prepared to release them should they pay a R5 000 bribe,” Hlathi said.

The two alleged masterminds behind the robbery fell for the trap and they were caught minutes after withdrawing money from an ATM at a petrol station in Belfast.

On arresting the men in the BMW, police realised that the truck was never hijacked. Instead, its driver had colluded with the four men to steal the truck and report it as hijacked.

“We again set up a trap and agreed to meet the missing driver and another accomplice at Carnival City Casino in Gauteng. We told him [the driver] that he was going to get his share of the money,” he said.

The six men were expected to apply for bail on July 6. - Sapa

— An alleged crack dealer’s plan to allow a client to buy him shoes in exchange for drugs was stopped short by Stuart police Friday, according to an affidavit released Monday.

Michael Deshawn Harris, 30, of the 7900 block of Southeast Kingsway Street in Hobe Sound, was charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and resisting arrest without violence.

Police had been watching a foreclosed home in the 800 block of Southeast Nassau Street after a suspicious vehicle was reported parked in the driveway several times that day.

Around 10:53 p.m., police saw a car matching the given description parked in the driveway with a white male in the driver’s seat. The report says Harris approached the car but began to run when he saw police. He was taken into custody after a short foot chase.

The suspicious car quickly left the area, but the driver was later stopped and questioned by police. He said he attempted to purchase crack from Harris earlier in the day but didn’t have any cash, so he took Harris to the mall and used credit cards to buy him $250 worth of merchandise in exchange for the drugs.

When the man brought Harris home, Harris allegedly claimed he couldn’t find the crack. The man told police he arranged to take Harris to Wal-Mart later that evening not only to obtain the drugs he was owed, but also to purchase a pair of shoes for Harris in exchange for additional drugs.

Harris was transported to the Martin County Jail and was being held Monday in lieu of $10,500 bail.

William Saucer Sr. became a “father” again late in life. He adopted his grandson, now 19, when the boy was 4 months old. A second grandson, now 13, came to live with them at 4 weeks old.

Saucer and wife, Irene, are slow to speak of their daughter, Sharon.

“She just got in with the wrong group when she was a younger woman,” William Saucer says. “It’s not that she was a bad person.”

Irene Saucer adds, “She had both boys out of wedlock with two different men. We don’t have a lot of contact with her, but I know she’s happy that her children are happy and in a good home.”

The Saucers have not had major problems adjusting to being the parents of record at their advanced age.

“They’ve been wonderful boys, no trouble at all,” said William Saucer, 82. “They bang the drums a little loud in the basement sometimes, but we can cope.”

Irene Saucer, 81, said, “A lot of church groups and dedicated friends have helped us raise them. They do things like take the boys to sports practices and school events.”

William Saucer taught health and physical education at the old Lincoln High School until 1972. He then moved to Thompkins Middle School, where he taught seventh-grade social studies until retiring in 1991.

In a teaching career that spanned 27 years, Irene Saucer was an instructor at Stanley Hall Elementary School, Evans Middle School and Dexter Elementary School.

William Saucer II is a sophomore at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., where he is a member of the track team. Loren Henderson will be an eighth-grader at Evansville Day School.

“The biggest adjustment being older parents came in the area of getting baby sitters,” William Saucer said. “Irene and I are pretty active socially, including going to dances. We didn’t want to completely stop going out.”

William Saucer Jr. is a Boy Scout and played on the soccer and basketball teams at Day School. He’s studying computer technology and business in college.

Loren Henderson, who also plays basketball, sings and wants to be a musician. He has drum line practice twice a week and is involved in youth choir.

“A big advantage for us is that we don’t have health limitations,” Irene Saucer said, smiling. “I have a little high blood pressure, and that old man sitting in the corner there doesn’t even take a single pill.”

William Saucer explains, “We have house rules. We want Loren in bed by 10:30, and when William Jr. comes home we like for him to be back in the house by 12:30 a.m. He doesn’t let us down. Both boys have done an excellent job of choosing friends.”

The boys have had no contact with their biological fathers. Their mother has visited a few times and telephones occasionally.

“A big help was Day School itself,” William Saucer said. “It’s small and very family-oriented. The people there are very cooperative with parents and caregivers.”

Would they recommend taking on the extra responsibility to other grandparents?”

“Absolutely,” Irene Saucer said. “To save the children, you must do what you must do. What we have we share.”

‘The incident took place Thursday night in Bhojpur village in Saharanpur district, where Zakir, 25, had to face the wrath of the girl鈥檚 family and her relatives,’ police inspector Manvendra Singh told IANS over phone.

Just before the marriage was about to start, Zakir demanded Rs.50,000 cash from the girl鈥檚 family and said he would accept the girl only after his demand was met, police said.

鈥淓ven after repeated pleas by the girl鈥檚 family members, Zakir remained adamant on his demand. Enraged over the dowry demand, the girl鈥檚 brothers and other relatives forcibly made Zakir wear a garland of shoes along with a dog collar,’ Singh said.

Venting their ire, the girl鈥檚 family members later brought Zakir outside of the marriage hall and blackened his face. Zakir was then paraded in the village, according to police.

鈥淥n getting information about the incident from some locals, we rushed to the spot and controlled the situation,’ Singh said.

While a case for demanding dowry has been slapped against Zakir, three family members of the girl have also been detained for manhandling the groom, he added.

Saharanpur is some 350 km from Lucknow.

ROANOKE RAPIDS — An April 21 search warrant, which landed a Roanoke Rapids man in federal custody on cocaine related charges, has now led to the arrest of his wife for allegedly selling counterfeit shoes and purses from her home.

Lt. Jay Burch of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said during the April raid, narcotics agents seized 94 pairs of fake Nike shoes, three pairs of counterfeit Bape shoes, a pair of counterfeit Timberland boots, 13 knockoff Coach bags and two phony Dolce & Gabbana handbags.

Tongia Northington Lynch, 32, who is a corrections officer in Virginia, allegedly ordered the items from New York, having them shipped to Roanoke Rapids where she sold them from her home, Burch said.

It is not clear how much money she made from the sales, but Burch said the items seized had a street value of $13,560, which equals the amount of money retailers selling the legitimate items would lose.

Lynch’s arrest, along with the arrest of her husband, Corey, on federal drug charges, stem from an investigation that began in March, 2007, Burch said yesterday.

Corey Lynch is currently in federal custody awaiting trial for allegedly selling large amounts of cocaine from the residence.

Further investigation following his arrest led to his wife being charged with felony conspiracy and felony criminal use of counterfeit trademarks.

Agent T.A. Harris arrested Lynch at a residence in Roanoke Rapids. She was released on $5,000 bond and has a July 5 court date. Burch said the arrests were the result of citizen complaints of large amounts of drugs and counterfeit items being sold.

The scheme announced Saturday is applicable for students of Classes 6 to 8, belonging to SC and ST communities.
‘The scheme will first be introduced in 1,114 boarding schools run by the tribal welfare department across the 18 districts where about 70,000 students are being enrolled,’ a government statement said.

Government officials said that the move to provide free shoes and socks to students is likely to play a positive role in inspiring more children even in remote areas to enrol.
